Cybercrime Adopts SaaS Models, Boosts Pre-Attack Strategies

The RSAC Conference in San Francisco unveiled critical insights from Fortinet about the evolving tactics of cybercriminals, likening their operations to business models. The emphasis was on how attackers conduct reconnaissance or market research to execute their strategies more effectively. The concept of DDoS-as-a-Service has emerged, showcasing the sophistication of these threats. Derek Manky from Fortinet outlined that the driving force behind this trend is monetization, with criminals increasingly selling tools such as ransomware kits using models similar to SaaS.

Research highlighted an 18% increase in reconnaissance from last year, conducted mainly via network scans powered by automation, rapidly identifying system vulnerabilities. This marks a shift toward enhanced efficiency in cyber-attacks, with artificial intelligence playing a significant role in refining these methods. Manky’s experience in cybersecurity, coupled with his work with the Cyber Threat Alliance and INTERPOL Expert Group, demonstrates ongoing efforts to develop frameworks for responsibly managing these threats.

Contributing Editor Terry Sweeney was also introduced, emphasizing his dedication to technology and security coverage. The analysis solidifies the need for vigilance and innovation in cybersecurity as cybercrime grows more sophisticated by adopting business models, highlighting the necessity for advancements in defending against these powerful threats.
